designed by Czesław Knothe

A wire mesh chair designed in 1955 by prof. Czesław Knothe is the object that opens the Czesław Knothe collection by Vzór. Similarly as in the case of the first Vzór collection, dedicated to the work of Roman Modzelewski, the collection is based on the same rules and values. The collection will promote the designer’s oeuvre and has been prepared respecting the copyright law. It will be put into production using the newest technologies that guarantee a serial production.

The difficulties that designers encountered at that time resulted in an innovative use of a material which had not been used before in furniture making. Lack of material forced Knothe to experiment with wire mesh that was widely available. He created chairs and armchairs with an unusually light form. Although the famous wire chair Diamond design by Harry Bertoia had become known to the world three years earlier, Knothe’s furniture were considered as very innovative and extremely comfortable, as for that time period.

Wire mesh furniture products by Czesław Knothe have never been produced serially. Only the metal wire mesh chair and armchair that remained are stored in the National Museum in Warsaw.

A contemporary version of the chair implemented by Vzór was rewarded a distinction in the “must have 2015” competition organized by the Łódź Design Festival.
